Important Note: We love the article, but it contains a factual error that we wish to set straight. Heidi bought the store in 1978 from Frank Marx, the original owner. Her father was a longtime customer of Frank's and her parents provided the loan (and lots of good advice!), but her father was never the owner.
Frank Music Company was founded by Frank Marx in 1937 and has been serving
New York's classical music community ever since. Performers, teachers, and
students rely on us because we maintain an unusually comprehensive
inventory including instrumental, vocal, and chamber music of all European and
American publishers. Our staff is small in number but mighty in knowledge,
experience, and helpfulness.
Though far from a complete listing, this website will give some idea of
what we have in the store. Unlike online merchants who simply download
publishers' databases onto their sites, we feel it's more honest and more
helpful to our customers to list things we customarily keep in stock.
Because the website is a work in progress, we encourage you to get in
touch and ask for pieces you don't see listed; out of the 100,000 or so things
we have, we've only managed to catalog 20,000 so far! Over time, we will
continue to refine the details, add pieces we have on the shelves and list
new publications as we receive them.
In addition to ordering online, we're happy to take your order as we have
for many years...by telephone! No annoying menu of options to press or
listening to an excruciating synthesized version of the Pachelbel Canon
while a disembodied voice tells you how important your call is... you will
just get a live human type with a pencil in hand. For the extreme
Luddites, there's always the U.S. postal service! Of course, the greatest treat is
always to come to the store in person. If you live or study in New York
or are planning to be in town, we look forward to meeting you. We are in the
heart of midtown Manhattan and as alluring as the Internet can be, we feel
it is no substitute for visiting us, looking at the great music that's
here, seeing the newest publications, and discovering why so many professional
musicians think we're special.
